Iranian MPs Pass Generalities of Bill on Safeguarding Nuclear Achievements

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian lawmakers on Sunday approved the generalities of a motion that will subject the credibility of the results of nuclear talks between Tehran and six world powers to complying with a series of requirements meant to safeguard Iran's nuclear achievements.

The generalities of the motion were passed with the support of a majority of the parliamentarians. Its details will be put to the vote on Tuesday.

According to the plan, Iran's administration will be obligated to observe a series of requirements in a possible final nuclear deal with the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

The motion stipulates that results of the nuclear talks will be acceptable only if the final deal entails the removal of the whole anti-Iran sanctions, all at once, on the very day when it will take effect.

It also stresses that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will have permission to do only "conventional monitoring" activities within the framework of the Safeguards Agreement when it comes to Iran's nuclear sites.

The motion also rules out any access to Iran's military, security or non-nuclear sensitive centers and dismisses any restriction on Iran's acquisition of nuclear know-how for peaceful purposes or research and development (R&D) in the nuclear field.

Iran and the six powers are negotiating to hammer out a lasting accord that would end more than a decade of impasse over Tehran's civilian nuclear program.

On April 2, the two sides reached a framework nuclear agreement in Lausanne, Switzerland, with both sides committed to push for a final deal until the end of June.
