Iran’s Parliament Gives Vote of Confidence to Education Minister

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian lawmakers on Wednesday gave vote of confidence to Education Minister Ali Asghar Fani, who had been impeached after he failed to convince the lawmakers about his performance.

Fani appeared on Parliament floor on Wednesday to respond to the questions of parliament members attending the impeachment session.

At the end of the open session chaired by the Parliament's First Vice-Speaker Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabi-Fard, 76 MPs voted for the plan to dismiss the minister, but 167 lawmakers voted against it and the minister managed to receive a vote of confidence.

The impeachment proceeding against Fani had been approved with 64 signatures last week.

The MPs who opposed Fani accused him of inability to satisfy the society of the personnel engaged in education, as well as inability to attract the administration’s attention to the importance of education and training.

Fani had won the parliament's vote of confidence in October 2013 with 185 votes to 53.

Under the Iranian Constitution, lawmakers can impeach an individual minister when they deem it necessary. An impeachment motion can be submitted when it has at least ten signatures.
