UNSC to Close Iran Nuclear File after 10 Years: Deputy FM

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi underscored that the country's nuclear file in the United Nations Security Council won't last any more than 10 years, something a Monday resolution has explicitly specified.

Speaking at a press conference in Tehran on Wednesday, Araqchi emphasized that monitoring of Iran's commitments under a final nuclear deal with world powers will end after 10 years under a resolution the UNSC had adopted.

The 15-memebr United Nations Security Council held a session on Monday and unanimously passed a resolution endorsing a document Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) have finalized on Tehran's nuclear energy program.

According to the resolution, Araqchi added, the period of UNSC's monitoring will not exceed 10 years, even though certain parties may seek to extend that time.

There is no place for any discussion on reversibility of anti-Iran sanctions beyond 10 years, he underlined.

While the arrangements for the sanctions to be reinstated under a so-called "snapback" plan will be valid for only 10 years, the US has announced it wants that period extended by an additional five years.

US under-secretary of state and top negotiator, Wendy Sherman, claimed that the five permanent UNSC members already are talking about extending that time.

"They will introduce an additional resolution to put in place the same mechanism for an additional five years," she said.
