Swiss Official Highlights Iran's Role in Middle East Peace

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Swiss State Secretary Yves Rossier hailed Iran as a leading actor in the Middle East that could further contribute to regional peace after striking a nuclear deal with world powers.

"As a major player in the region, Iran should play its role in the establishment of peace and security in the region, particularly after (the conclusion of) nuclear negotiations," Rossier said in a Wednesday meeting in Tehran with Head of the Strategic Research Center of Iran's Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati.

The Swiss official said Iran can also contribute to better international interactions, even though some countries may feel uneasy about a lasting nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

Iran and the six nations on July 14 finalized the text of a comprehensive 159-page nuclear deal, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Earlier today, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani gave an assurance that the country's strengthened regional position following a final nuclear deal should never cause concern for the neighbors.

"It is an illusion that if Iran gains power, it will thus interfere in the internal affairs of others. We deem interference as inappropriate and wrong, and believe that the affairs of every country should be handled by its own people," President Rouhani stated.

The president, however, reaffirmed Iran's support for the "oppressed" nations and further pledged that Tehran will do its utmost in the fight against terrorism, a threat to the region and the world.
