Barcelona Fined over Pro-Catalan Flags at Champions League Final

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – European soccer's governing body UEFA has fined Barcelona 30,000 euros ($33,006) after fans displayed pro-Catalan independence flags at last month's Champions League final in Berlin.

UEFA announced the decision on its website (www.uefa.com) on Thursday following a meeting of its Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body, saying Barca had breached article 16 (2) (e) of the regulations, according to a report by The Finacial Express.

The article prohibits “the use of gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit any message that is not fit for a sports event, particularly messages that are of a political, ideological, religious, offensive or provocative nature”.

Barca said they respected the decision even though they disagreed with it completely and noted that the UEFA delegate at the match had praised the club for the “excellent behavior” of their fans at the Olympic Stadium.

In a statement on their website (www.fcbarcelona.es), they added that the club’s lawyers would assess whether an appeal against the decision was viable.

Barca, who beat Juventus 3-1 to win their fifth European crown, has long been an outlet for fans who support Catalan independence from Spain to express their beliefs.

Supporters of the club were criticized by politicians from Spain’s ruling People’s Party (PP) after they whistled the national anthem at the King’s Cup final at the end of May.
