EU’s Mogherini: JCPOA to Open New Chapters for Iran, Int’l Community

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said implementation of a final nuclear deal between Tehran and six world powers will have far-reaching effects on Iran, its ties with Europe and the international community and also on the Middle East region.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Iran’s foreign minister in Tehran on Tuesday, Mogherini praised the Iranian officials’ “hard work and commitment” that helped finalize the text of a long-awaited nuclear deal with the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

She acknowledged the supports provided by Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, President Hassan Rouhani, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, and Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi.

She said the “historic deal” proved that diplomacy and strong political will could settle problems, voicing the European Union’s readiness to contribute to implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The nuclear deal has the potential to open new chapters in four grounds, Mogherini stressed.

First of all, it will open a new chapter for Iran, 60% of whose population is under 30 years old, she said.

The nuclear deal would also affect Iran’s relations with the international community, a clear sign of which was the United Nations Security Council’s resolution that endorsed the JCPOA, she explained.

Mogherini added that Iran-EU relations will also witness changes after implementation of the deal.

Once the anti-Iran sanctions are lifted, major European businesses will make investment in the Islamic Republic, she added.

And the fourth chapter, she noted, will be opened for the Middle East region, showing that cooperation could replace confrontation.

The implementation of Iran nuclear deal will be helpful in finding a solution to the crisis in Syria and fight terrorism, she added.

Mogherini’s trip to Iran is the second leg of her visit to the Persian Gulf region. She earlier made a trip to Riyadh on Monday and held talks with Saudi officials, mainly on the recent conclusion of Iran nuclear talks.

The EU foreign policy chief coordinated the nuclear diplomacy with Iran on behalf of the sextet.
