Tehran to Be Baghdad’s Top Partner in Agriculture: Iraqi Minister

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iraqi Minister of Agriculture Falah Hassan al-Zaidan said a planned doubling of farm products imports from Iran would make Iran the Arab country’s leading partner in agricultural cooperation.

The Iraqi minister, who has travelled to Iran in a bid to develop the two countries’ cooperation in agriculture, held a meeting with the governor of Iran’s northern province of Mazandaran in the city of Sari on Tuesday night.

Zaidan referred to an agreement he signed on Monday with Iran's Agriculture Minister Mahmoud Hojjati, saying the deal would double the value of Iranian agro-products’ exports to Iraq, which currently amounts to $1.5 billion annually.

That would make Iran the biggest trade partner for Iraq in agriculture, he added.

According to the 12-clause agricultural agreement, cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad would be promoted in agriculture, and would include exchange of experience and technical expertise in agricultural research, fishery, modern irrigation systems and other fields.

The two countries have also agreed on the formation of a joint working committee for boosting agricultural cooperation.
