Iran’s FM Zarif, Syria’s President Assad Meet in Damascus


TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is in Syria for an official visit, met with Syria's President Bashar al-Assad on Wednesday.

After the meeting held in the Syrian capital, Damascus, the Iranian minister said that he had positive talks with President Assad.

He added that he and the Syrian president exchanged views on finding a political solution to the ongoing crisis in the Arab country.

It is time for regional countries to respect the Syrian nation’s rights and make efforts to fight terrorism and sectarianism, Zarif stated.

During his stay in Damascus, the visiting Iranian foreign minister is slated to hold talks with his Syrian counterpart, Walid al-Muallem.

Iran’s proposed peace plan on Syria is expected to be on the agenda of talks between Zarif and the Arab country’s officials.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman had on Tuesday announced that Tehran will introduce its 4-article plan to end the Syrian crisis after the conclusion of its consultations with regional states over the issue.

“Iran’s four-article plan to help resolve the ongoing crisis in Syria has been prepared within the framework of the previously-mentioned principles and is being updated,” Afkham reiterated.

She went on to say that “the plan will be put forth after consultations with the Syrian government and other influential players.”

Zarif on Tuesday started a new tour of regional countries by visiting Lebanon. He is also due to visit a number of other states, including Pakistan and India.
