Terrorists Attack Airport Radar System in Pakistan's Balochistan, Engineer Killed

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – At least one engineer was killed when militants attacked a Jiwani airport in Balochistan’s Gwadar district in the wee hours of Sunday.

“Around 12 armed men on six motorcycles attacked the airport at around 4:30am killing a Civil Aviation Authority engineer,” Gwadar Deputy Commissioner Abdul Hameed Abro said.

“An assistant engineer was killed and a sub-assistant engineer injured during the attack.The assailants also kidnapped airport manager, Mehmood Niazi,” he said, according to  a sunday report by Pakistan-based newspaper the Express Tribune.  

Further, the deputy commissioner said, “The airport radar system was also destroyed in the attack.”

“Four local Baloch were also present at the airport at the time but were spared by the attackers,” he added.

The airport has not been in use for the past 20 years. Law enforcement agencies personnel have reached the site and started investigation into the incident.

Balochistan Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch condemned the attack and asked Mekran commissioner for a report probing the incident. ”Those responsible for the attack will be traced and punished,” he added.

Last year, a group of armed men disguised in security forces’ uniform attacked the international radar in the coastal town of Pasni, Gwadar killing one Balochistan Constabulary official and injuring another.
