Iranian, Belarusian MPs Confer on Judicial Cooperation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A group of Iranian lawmakers, who are in Minsk for an official visit, discussed with their Belarusian counterparts on ways to improve cooperation between the two countries in judicial affairs.

Headed by Chairman of the Parliament’s Judicial and Legal Affairs Commission Allahyar Malekshahi, the Iranian parliamentarians met with Belarusian lawmakers and also the east European country’s Supreme Court chief.

During the meetings the two sides discussed different issues, including reforms in judicial system and judicial cooperation between the two countries.

At the Wednesday meeting, Malekshahi briefed Belarusian lawmakers on Iranian legal and judicial system structure.

He also called for joint cooperation with Belarus in campaign against organized crimes, drug and human-trafficking, IRNA reported.

Last month, Iranian Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani had underscored the need for the expansion of mutual cooperation between Iran and Belarus in such fields as human rights and counter-terrorism.

In a meeting with the visiting Belarusian Prosecutor General Alexander Vladimirovich Konyuk in the Iranian capital of Tehran, Ayatollah Amoli Larijani said Iran and Belarus can further promote their collaborations in different judicial and legal fields.

The two countries are familiar with the judicial systems of each other, and this can pave the way for the promotion of bilateral judicial relations, he added at the time.

Ayatollah Amoli Larijani also referred to the independent nature of judiciary systems in both countries, saying, “Belarus, like Iran, has always been under the pressure of Westerners due to its independence and refusal to accept Western human rights bases.”

Vladimirovich Konyuk, for his part, praised Iran’s judiciary system as one enjoying outstanding features, and expressed Minsk’s readiness to prepare proper legal and judicial grounds for the expansion of economic ties.
