Iran-Russia Cooperation Vital for Regional Peace: President Rouhani

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani highlighted the “strategic” impact of partnership between Tehran and Moscow on peace and security across the region.

Cooperation between Iran and Russia is a strategic factor in the region’s security and stability, President Rouhani said in a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the 70th annual session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday.

President Rouhani also highlighted the identical views of Iran and Russia on the regional and international issues.

Making a reference to a nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), the Iranian chief executive said the deal has “paved the way for the expansion and deepening of cooperation” between Iran and Russia in all fields.

The two presidents also discussed the latest regional developments, including the situation of Iraq, Syria and Yemen.

The Russian president, for his part, said Tehran-Moscow cooperation in the fight on terrorism and contribution to the regional and international security stands at a high level.

Putin also reaffirmed Iran’s right to enjoy nuclear technology for peaceful purposes and the necessity for the full termination of the anti-Iran sanctions.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3)  on July 14 reached a conclusion on a lasting nuclear agreement that would terminate all sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear energy program after coming into force.
