IRGC General, Martyred in Syria, Laid to Rest in Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Major General Hossein Hamedani, a sophisticated strategist serving in the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), who was martyred by the ISIL terrorist while in an advisory mission in Syria, was laid to rest in his home city, west of Iran, on Monday.

A huge crowd of people in the city of Hamedan attended the funeral of the top general this morning.

Major General Hamedani was killed Thursday evening by the ISIL terrorists on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Aleppo.

A one-time commander during the 8-year Iraqi imposed war on Iran in the 1980s, the general was a senior military advisor that played a “decisive role in the protection of the holy shrine of Sayyida Zeinab (AS)” against terrorist attacks, the IRGC said in a statement on Friday.

The shrine of Sayyida Zeinab, a sister of the third Shiite Imam (AS), is located in Damascus.

Earlier on Sunday, a mass funeral was held in capital Tehran for the popular commander.

In a message on Saturday, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei expressed condolences to the family of the martyr, his friends, comrades in arms and the IRGC personnel.

The Leader also paid tribute to General Hamedani as an “old, amiable and hardworking” veteran who spent his youth defending the country and the Islamic Republic Establishment in the Iraqi imposed war, and made efforts to protect the holy Shiite sites against assaults by the Takfiri and anti-Islamic militants in his later life.

Imam Khamenei further underlined that those serving in the IRGC and other branches of the Armed Forces are steadfastly aspiring to achieve martyrdom.

“May God bless martyr Hamedani and all warriors on the path of the Truth,” the Supreme Leader added.
