Iran, Iraq, Syria, Russia Counter-Terror Cooperation Successful: MP

DAMASCUS (Tasnim) – Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi on Wednesday referred to the ongoing cooperation between Iran, Syria, Iraq, and Russia as a positive and successful step.

“We are witnessing the positive outcomes of this quadripartite cooperation in the fight against terrorism at regional level,” Boroujerdi told reporters upon his arrival in the Syrian capital of Damascus.

“Whoever boasts about fighting terrorism should have a positive stance towards this cooperation,” he added.

He further referred to the US-led coalition purportedly formed to fight terrorists in Syria, saying the so-called alliance failed and now a new field has been opened in Syria, which will have positive effects for the Arab country.

“It is expected that the US policy against terrorism take a positive approach (towards the issue),” the senior Iranian lawmaker said, adding that any negative stance would actually be deemed as a kind of cooperation with terrorism.

A change in recent stances held by Arab and Western states was a result of practical measures and successes made in the war theater, he noted.

Boroujerdi further explained about his Syria visit, saying he will hold talks with high-ranking Syrian officials on the deepening of mutual cooperation in all fields.

Since late September, Russia has been carrying out bombings against the ISIL terrorist group in Syria, after Russia’s parliament granted President Vladimir Putin authorization to deploy the country's air force abroad.

Iran has welcomed the Russian involvement to help settle the protracted crisis in the Arab country.

Syria has been entangled in civil war since March 2011. The ISIL Takfiri group now controls parts of the Arab country, mostly in the east.

In the past four and half years, more than 240,000 people have died in Syria -overwhelmingly civilians- and around 4 million Syrian people are now refugees in other countries. Around 8 million others have been displaced internally.
