NAM Decries Double Standards on Int’l Law
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) deplored selective stances towards the international law, expressing concern about the negative consequences of unilateral measures when it comes to respect for the rule of law.
Speaking on behalf of the NAM, whose rotating presidency is assumed by Iran, Iranian Deputy UN Ambassador Gholam Hossein Dehqani rejected any double-standard attitude towards the international law.
He made the comments in a meeting of the UN General Assembly’s Legal Committee (also known as the Sixth Committee), held at the UN in New York on Wednesday.
The NAM members voice concern about the negative impacts of adoption of unilateral measures regarding the rule of law in the international relations, and believe that no country or group of countries have a right to deprive another state of its legal and legitimate rights because of political objectives, he added.
Dehqani also underlined that respect for the rule of law at the national and international levels is necessary for maintaining international peace and security and achieving the goals of economic and social development.
The Sixth Committee is the primary forum for the consideration of legal questions in the General Assembly. All of the UN Member States are entitled to representation on the Sixth Committee as one of the main committees of the General Assembly.
