New Attitude in Int’l Policy Ushered in by JCPOA: Iran’s Nuclear Chief

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi said a negotiated nuclear deal between Tehran and six world powers brought about a new approach in the international politics towards the settlement of disputes.

The success in achieving a nuclear accord between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) via negotiations has introduced “a new plan and attitude" into the international political system, Salehi said, addressing the 61st meeting of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, held in Japan’s Nagasaki.

The Iranian official added that the emerging approach, as a result of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), proved that “the power of logic overcomes the logic of power.”

“According to that approach, in order for a safe world based upon stability and good neighborliness, one should know that the rights such as sovereignty, deciding the fate, progress and development -which also includes peaceful employment of the nuclear energy- are part of the nations’ inherent rights that need to be respected and recognized,” he added.

Salehi is in Japan to hold talks with the Japanese officials on a range of issues, including cooperation on nuclear safety measures.

His trip comes after Iran and the Group 5+1 (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3) on July 14 reached a nuclear deal that would terminate all sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear energy program after coming into force.

According to the JCPOA, Iran will be allowed “to move forward with an exclusively peaceful, indigenous nuclear programme, in line with scientific and economic considerations, in accordance with the JCPOA, and with a view to building confidence and encouraging international cooperation.”

Japan, with a long experience of employing nuclear technologies and dealing with nuclear disasters, appears to be a good partner for Iran for the exchange of nuclear safety know-how.
