Syrian Forces on Brink of Recapturing Aleppo Military Airbase

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria’s military forces are about to retake control of the Kowaires military airbase on the outskirts of the northwestern city of Aleppo, a senior official said.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, ranking military official Ali Maghsoud said the army is going to raid the Kowaires airbase, near Aleppo, and recapture it from the terrorist groups.

He also pointed to new victories in the battlefield against the militants, saying the army troops, fighting in cooperation with the voluntary forces, are continuing to make new advances on the outskirts of the cities of Lattakia and Idlib.

According to Tasnim dispatches, while Russian fighter jets continue carrying out sorties near Lattakia, the Syrian ground forces are getting closer to the western coastal city and inflicting heavy losses on terrorists.

Meanwhile, SANA quoted a Syrian military source as saying that the army forces have gained control over al-Sheikh Ahmad village in the eastern countryside of Aleppo and carried out a special operation against strongholds of terrorists in Maaret al-Numan area, south of Idlib.

Syria has been entangled in civil war since March 2011. The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) Takfiri terrorist group controls parts of the Arab country, mostly in the east.

Meanwhile, Russia’s aerial support for the Syrian forces has given fresh impetus to the fight against the foreign-backed terrorists.

Since late September, Russia has been carrying out bombings against the ISIL terrorists in Syria, after Russia's parliament granted President Putin authorization to deploy the country's air force abroad.

In the past four and half years, more than 250,000 people have died in Syria -overwhelmingly civilians- and around 4 million Syrian people are now refugees in other countries. Around 8 million others have been displaced internally.
