EU Hails Arak Document as “Important Milestone” towards JCPOA Implementation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini hailed a document for modernization of Arak heavy water nuclear reactor as “another important milestone” towards the full implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) reached between Iran and world powers.

“One of the important commitments reached between the E3/EU+3 and Iran under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) has been the modernization of the Arak research reactor in Iran. An Official Document which outlines the commitments of the JCPOA participants in this important project has been concluded,” Mogherini said in a statement on Sunday after releasing the EU's document on the modernization of Arak nuclear reactor.

Iran also released the same document for modernization of the reactor early on Saturday.

The document has been signed by the foreign ministers of the Group 5+1(Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), the European Union representative as well as Iran’s foreign minister.

“The document signed by the Foreign Ministers of the E3+3, Iran and myself represents another important milestone on the way towards the full implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action,” she added.

“In my capacity as the Coordinator of the Joint Commission established under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, I am pleased to release the Arak Official Document.”

According to the document, Tehran will assume the position of project manager. China will also participate in the redesigning and construction of the modernized reactor.

The United States will provide technical support and will review the reactor's modernized design.

France, Britain and Germany will also participate in the review. Russia, a major broker of the July 14 deal, will provide consultation in the process.

Tehran and the Group 5+1 on July 14 reached a conclusion over the text of a comprehensive 159-page deal on Iran’s nuclear energy program.

According to part of the deal, Iran’s Arak heavy water reactor is to be reconfigured.
