Political Purposes behind Drop in Oil Prices: Iran’s VP

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri said political reasons have played a major role in the slump in oil prices, denouncing the moves that aim to undermine the Muslim community’s interests.

“The reasons behind the sharp decline in oil prices cannot be only economic. They are mainly political and certain countries are damaging the Islamic Ummah’s (society’s) interests in this regard,” Jahangiri said in a meeting with Algerian Senate Speaker Abdulqader bin Saleh, in Algiers on Wednesday.

Jahangiri, who arrived in Algeria earlier in the day, had announced that he would negotiate with the North African country’s officials to avert further slump in the global oil prices.

Elsewhere in the meeting, the Iranian vice president highlighted the ample opportunities for expansion of ties between Iran and Algeria, stressing that the two Muslim countries can promote cooperation in the field of oil and gas industry, among others.

Bin Saleh, for his part, voiced the Algerian Senate’s support for the enhancement of relations between Tehran and Algiers, hailing the grounds for mutual cooperation in different areas.
