Slovenia to Reopen Iran Embassy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Slovenia’s incoming envoy to Iran said the European country is going to reopen its embassy in Tehran, which had been closed in 2013 as part of general austerity policies.

In a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Tehran on Monday, Slovenia’s new accredited ambassador said there are plans to reopen the country’s embassy in Iran.

In March 2013, in response to the difficult financial and economic situation in Slovenia, the European country’s government decided to shrink its diplomatic network as part of general austerity policies.

Elsewhere in the meeting, Igor Jukič announced that Slovenian President Borut Pahor, as well as the ministers of economy and foreign affairs, are planned to visit Iran soon.

President Rouhani, for his part, called for attempts to enhance relations between Tehran and Ljubljana in light of the removal of anti-Iran sanctions under a July nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

He also emphasized the need for closer political and diplomatic cooperation between the two countries in the fight against terrorism, which he described as a threat to the whole world.
