Building of New Nuclear Plants in Iran to Begin in Days: Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi said on Tuesday that construction of two new nuclear power plants in the country will kick off with the assistance of Russia.

Speaking in a radio interview, Kamalvandi said the construction of the two plants will begin next week.

In November 2014, Tehran and Moscow signed an agreement, guaranteed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on the construction of eight nuclear power units in Iran.

AEOI Chief Ali Akbar Salehi and Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom) CEO Sergei Kirienko inked the documents, promoting the links in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy between the two countries.

According to the agreement, Russia will construct eight pressurized water reactors “turn-key ready” in Iran. Four of them will be built at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.

In September this year, Rosatom CEO announced that preparation work for the construction of a second unit at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant has begun.
