Implementation of S-300 Missile Deal Underway: Iranian Spokesman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossein Jaberi Ansari said the process of implementing the country’s contract with Russia over delivery of the S-300 air defense missile system to the Islamic Republic is underway.

“In the new atmosphere created after the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the government of the Russian Federation has voiced its readiness to deliver the missile system and meet its commitments under the contract,” Jaberi Ansari told reporters in his press briefing on Monday.

Long negotiations over technical interpretations of the issue have been held between the two sides and the contract is in the process of implementation, he noted.

A Russian source earlier this week said that the delivery of Russian S-300PMU-2 air defense systems to Iran will begin in January.

“(Russia plans) to begin the process of delivery of the first regiment of the S-300PMU-2 air defense systems in January and to complete it in February. Iran is due to receive the second regiment of these systems in August or September 2016,” the source was quoted by Russia-based TASS news agency as saying.

“Russia will thus fulfill its obligations to supply the S-300PMU-2 air defense systems to Iran,” he added.

According to the source, about 80 Iranian specialists will be trained to use the S-300 missile systems at the Mozhaisky Military Space Academy.
