Iran, Afghanistan Eye Comprehensive Cooperation Deal

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Afghanistan’s Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah voiced eagerness to finalize a comprehensive document on Tehran-Kabul cooperation, which would set the ground for expansion of ties in all fields.

In a meeting with the Afghan official in Tehran on Tuesday, President Rouhani expressed the hope the Abdullah’s visit would mark a “milestone” in achievement of the cooperation agreement and would help enhance the economic, trade and cultural ties between the two neighbors.

The president also reiterated Iran’s support for security, stability and unity in Afghanistan.

Hailing the establishment of a national unity government in Afghanistan, President Rouhani said efforts to preserve such unity signifies the Afghan people’s “political maturity.”

For his part, Abdullah commended Iran for its unwavering support for the Afghan nation, expressing the hope that Kabul would be able to set the appropriate conditions for the Afghan refugees residing in Iran to return home.

He also called for the acceleration of efforts to strike the comprehensive cooperation document between the two countries.

The Afghan politician arrived in Iran on Monday and held meetings with Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

During the meeting with the Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei reiterated Iran’s support for Afghanistan, saying the Islamic Republic regards peace and security in the neighboring country as its own.
