High Election Turnout Sign of Revolution’s Strength: Iranian Cleric

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Tehran’s provisional Friday prayers leader hailed the strong presence of Iranians in the ongoing elections as a testimony to the religious strength of the Islamic Revolution.

The long queues formed at the polling stations since the early hours of morning is "a sign of the victory of the Islamic Revolution," Ayatollah Kazem Seddiqi said in an address to worshippers in Tehran on Friday.

He also referred to the high turnout in the polls as well as Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei’s wise knowledge of the threats as good indication of the Revolution’s solidity.

The cleric also cautioned against the enemy’s plots to infiltrate into Iran following the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a lasting nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

One of the objectives of infiltration is to make people indifferent to the arrogant enemies, Ayatollah Seddiqi warned.

The parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections began in Iran on Friday morning. Some 55 million Iranians are eligible to vote.

There are 290 seats in the Iranian parliament, elected by direct vote of people in nationwide election for four years.

The Assembly of Experts is also a high-ranking body that elects and oversees the activities of the leader of the Islamic Revolution.

Members of the 88-seat assembly are directly elected to office by people for an eight-year term. It holds biannual meetings to appoint a new chairman.
