UN Envoy Lauds Improvemnet in Iran’s Human Development Index

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The UN resident coordinator in Iran hailed a considerable improvement in the human development index (HDI) of Iran in a span of 14 years, saying the country’s HDI falls into the ‘high’ category.

Iran on Wednesday unveiled its human development report in 2015 at a meeting in Tehran, attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and UN resident coordinator in Iran Garry Lewis.

Speaking at the gathering, Lewis hailed a remarkable rise in Iran’s HDI in the world rankings, from 75th to 69th.

Iran’s HDI improved by 35 percent between 1990 and 2014, the envoy explained, congratulating Iran for the achievement.

In separate comments, Araqchi said the human development index reports demonstrate that Iran’s economy is resilient.

He also referred to the 2015 report as a testimony to the futility of the “unfair and illegal” anti-Iran sanctions.

Iran got rid of many unilateral Western sanctions  when a lasting nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) came into force.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was implemented on January 16, has terminated all nuclear-related sanctions on Iran.
