Syrian Army Resumes Operation in Aleppo after Militants' Attack

DAMASCUS (Tasnim) – Syrian army and popular forces have resumed their operations in all fronts of Aleppo after armed groups violated a recent truce agreed upon by major world powers took effect a few days ago.

According to Tasnim dispatches, Aleppo’s Operations Room announced the military operation in all fronts in Aleppo will be resumed after armed groups attacked Al-Ais hill and breached a recently-brokered ceasefire they had accepted.

“Syrian army has the right to respond to any violation of the ceasefire in all fronts of Aleppo and use the appropriate weaponry in its response,” the Operations Room added.

A cessation of fighting in Syria that took effect on February 27 was part of a negotiated deal, based on the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254, passed in December 2015.

The deal that contained three main commitments around humanitarian access, a negotiated ceasefire and a political transition was reached in Munich by the International Syria Support Group (ISSG), a group of international actors mandated to find a resolution to the Syrian conflict.

In theory, the ceasefire should apply to all of Syria. However, Russia has insisted that, along with its allied forces, it reserve the right to attack the Daesh (ISIL) group and al-Nusra Front forces as these two groups are outside the framework of the ceasefire, as are other groups labelled as “terrorist” by the UN.

There are efforts to strengthen the ceasefire, increase humanitarian access and build confidence before the resumption of peace talks in Geneva on March 9.

Meanwhile, the Syrian troops have made great progress in retaking the towns and cities held by Daesh militants, sources told Tasnim, stressing that the siege on the terrorist group near such cities as Latakia, Aleppo, and Kobani has been tightened in recent days.

A military source in Aleppo told Tasnim on Tuesday that the Syrian army backed by support troops have managed to repel the attacks by a large number of Nusra Front terrorists, among others, on southern suburbs of Aleppo.

All areas in southern suburbs of Aleppo are now under the control of Syrian army, the source noted, adding, however, that the Daesh terrorists are heavily fighting the army in nearby areas to restore their domain.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists, including the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group, currently controlling parts of it, mostly in the east.

The Syrian conflict has killed at least 260,000 people, according to the UN, and more than half of Syria’s pre-war population of 22.4 million has been internally displaced or fled abroad.
