Zarif, Mogherini Confer on JCPOA Implementation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and European Union (EU) Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini discussed the implementation process of a lasting nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

Almost immediately upon his arrival to the Austrian capital of Vienna, Zarif held a meeting with Federica Mogherini during which they discussed the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) finalized on July 14, 2015 and began to implement it on January 16.

The Iranian top diplomat arrived in Vienna on Monday evening to take part in the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) meeting which is scheduled to be held on Tuesday.

The two sides also discussed regional and international developments.

Also in a separate meeting, the Iranian foreign minister held talks with his Australian counterpart Julie Bishop over the latest developments in Syria and the obstacles in the way of humanitarian aid’s delivery to the Arab country.

Iran, Russia, Turkey and Saudi Arabia as well as representatives of the European Union and the Arab League are among countries participating in the ISSG meeting on Tuesday.

The 17-nation ISSG aims to discuss the stalled negotiations, challenges in maintaining the February ceasefire and the UN delivery of humanitarian aid to various areas across Syria.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimates that over 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which has furthermore displaced over half of Syria’s pre-war population of about 23 million.
