Iran’s Sahand Destroyer to Be Equipped with More Advanced Gear: Commander

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said the homegrown Sahand destroyer, whose construction is almost complete, will be equipped with more advanced radars and weapons compared to previous destroyers.

Speaking to reporters, Rear Admiral Sayyari highlighted the Navy’s self-sufficiency in manufacturing state-of-the-art military hardware, including destroyers, saying that in the process of building any new generation of destroyers, the focus is on technological progress and growth based on the guidelines of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution.

“… Damavand destroyer, which was constructed after Jamaran destroyer, is more advanced and powerful,” the commander said, adding, “Undoubtedly, Sahand destroyer, which is now under construction, is 30 percent more advanced in terms of radar-evading stealth technology and equipped with different weapons.”

Sahand is the third destroyer manufactured as part of the Mowj (Wave) project in Iran. Its predecessors, Jamaran and Damavand, are currently in service and employed in naval missions in the international waters.

Admiral Sayyari further emphasized that the Navy plans to unveil new advanced domestically-made surface and sub-surface vessels in the near future.

Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the arms sphere.

Tehran has repeatedly stated that its military might is defensive in nature and poses no threat to other countries.
