Iraqi Troops Score Gains against Daesh in Fallujah, Salahuddin

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iraqi army, backed by volunteer forces and military advisers, managed to liberate more areas from the clutches of Daesh (also known as ISIL and ISIS) terrorists after delivering severe blows to them in Salahuddin province and the central city of Fallujah.

According to a report carried by Lebanon's al-Ahd news website, members of the Iraqi counter-terrorism forces continued their operation against Daesh terrorists in the city of Fallujah, Anbar province, on Saturday and succeeded in seizing control over the Golan neighborhood.

In a separate development, Iraqi troops repelled an attack by the terrorists in an area in northern Ramadi and killed scores of them.

Large groups of the militants were also killed in Albu Abid district, Western Ramadi, after Iraq’s artillery heavily pounded the positions of the terror group.

The Iraqi army on June 17 raised the national flag on the main government complex in Fallujah, with Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi congratulating the nation on the liberation of the city, situated roughly 69 kilometers west of the capital Baghdad.

"Fallujah has returned to the homeland. Our troops are in control of the city and have tightened their grip on its center," Abadi said in a televised address.

Fallujah was the first Iraqi city to fall to Daesh in 2014.

Army Frees 2 Areas in Salahuddin Province

On Saturday, the Iraqi army inflicted heavy losses on Daesh in north-central Salahuddin province and liberated the two villages of Albu Ameereh and al-Ain al-Baiza from the grip of the Takfiri group.

The troops also cleared residential areas near entrances of al-Shirqat city in north of Salahuddin.

The army is now trying to secure some safe exit routes for civilians so that it can start a major offensive against the terrorists in the area.

Separately, the Iraqi army continued its anti-terror campaign in the country's eastern province of Diyala and managed to seize large amounts of military equipment and ammunition in the terrorist group’s arms depots.

Iraqi army troops are seeking to win back militant-held regions in joint operations. They have managed to dislodge the militants from several areas over the past few days.
