Iranian MPs to Visit Syria Soon

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Members of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission plan to pay an official visit to war-stricken Syria in the near future, the spokesman for the commission said.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Seyed Hossein Naqavi Hosseini said several members of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission are slated to visit Syria after the holy month of Ramadan (which will end next week).

He added that the Iranian lawmakers will hold talks with high-ranking Syrian officials and visit areas of the Syrian army’s combat operations against terrorist groups.

The parliamentarian, however, said the exact date of the trip has not been determined yet and will be decided upon in an upcoming session of the commission.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a new report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.

In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.

Tehran insists that the Syrian nation is the only side that has the right to shape the future of its own country, rejecting foreign intervention with the use of force.
