Syria Slams Baghdad Terrorist Attacks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Syrian government condemned the Sunday’s terrorist attacks in Baghdad, Iraq, calling for international concerted action against terrorism.

“The Foreign and Expatriates Ministry of the Syrian Arab Republic condemns the bloody coward terrorist attack which on Sunday targeted al-Karrada area in central Baghdad, killing dozens, many of them women and children, injuring many others…,” Syria’s Foreign Ministry said in a Sunday statement as cited by the Arab country’s official SANA news agency.

The Syrian foreign ministry further expressed deep condolences with the bereaved families of those killed in the attacks.

It also urged the international community to mount pressure on the countries which are backing terrorism in the region and help uproot this global phenomenon.

The message came after at least 210 people lost their lives and 200 others sustained serious injuries in a twin attack in Baghdad early on Sunday.

The first attack occurred at about 1 a.m. local time (2200 GMT Saturday) when a bomber detonated his refrigerator truck packed with explosives in the capital’s south-central neighborhood of Karrada.

At least four buildings were severely damaged or partly collapsed, including a shopping mall that is thought to have been the main target of the bombing. Burnt-out shells of a lot of vehicles parked in the area were scattered all around.

Shortly afterwards, a roadside bomb explosion ripped through the Shallal market in Shaab neighborhood of northern Baghdad.

The Takfiri Daesh terrorist group later claimed responsibility for the attacks, which it said were aimed at Shiite neighborhoods of the Iraqi capital.
