Death Toll from Baghdad Blast Rises to 250: Iraq's Ministry

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The death toll from a massive suicide bombing in Baghdad over the weekend has reached 250, Iraq's Health Ministry said.

The massive suicide bombing in central Baghdad has now become the deadliest attack in Iraq since the 2003 US-led invasion, with the death toll reaching 250, according to the health ministry, Reuters reported.

Previously, security and medical officials had said the attack left at least 213 people dead and more than 200 others wounded.

The Daesh (also known as ISIL and ISIS) terrorist group claimed responsibility for the devastating blast, which went off early on Sunday in Karada, a predominantly Shiite neighborhood.

A lorry packed with explosives blew up on a crowded shopping street, which was packed with families out socializing after they had broken their fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Many of those killed were women and children.

The bomb attack came one week after Iraqi forces fully liberated the strategic city of Fallujah, situated roughly 69 kilometers west of Baghdad, from Daesh terrorists.

Having suffered heavy losses on the battlefield against Iraqi soldiers, Daesh has recently stepped up its terror attacks across Baghdad.
