Regional Insecurity, US’s Main Objective in Syria: Iranian Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A special assistant of Iran’s parliament speaker underlined that the primary objective of Americans’ engagement in Syria is to upset the regional situation for the sake of their own interest.

Speaking in a television talk show on Sunday night, Hossein Amir Abdollahian highlighted Washington’s deceptive conducts in the course of Syria peace talks.

The contradictory policies toward Syria indicate that the US has one main objective, which is making the region insecure to serve its own interests, Amir Abdollahian, a former deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, added.

His comments came ahead of a new round of peace talks on the five-year-long conflict in Syria, due to be held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011.

According to the UN, over 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which has also displaced over half of the Arab country’s pre-war population of about 23 million.
