Saudi Airstrikes Cause of Most Civilian Casualties in Yemen: UN

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The UN human rights office said on Thursday that Saudi warplanes have mainly targeted civilians in Yemen, accusing the regime of violating international law.

In a statement, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein called for an international investigation into the grave violations by the Saudi regime, Reuters reported.

"The cases monitored by the Office indicate that air strikes were the single largest cause of casualties," the UN report said.

"The prolonged duration of the conflict has strongly heightened the disastrous risk of a systemic collapse of Yemen."

Yemen’s defenseless people have been under massive attacks by the coalition led by the Saudi regime for nearly 17 months.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been launching deadly airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Nearly 9,400 Yemenis, including 4,000 women and children, have lost their lives in the deadly military campaign.
