Iran’s Nuclear Chief Goes to Brussels for Talks with EU, Belgian Officials

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi left Tehran for Brussels on Monday morning for talk about cooperation with Belgium and the European Union on peaceful employment of the nuclear industry.

Heading a delegation, Salehi has traveled to Brussels at the invitation of the EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Canete.

During his stay in Brussels, which hosts the headquarters of the main EU institutions, the top Iranian official is scheduled to hold meetings with Canete, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, and Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders to explore avenues for cooperation on the peaceful employment of nuclear energy.

Mr. Salehi is expected to sign a number of agreements in his Brussels trip.

Back in April, AEOI Spokesman Behrouz Kamalvand said Iran and the EU have the potential to promote cooperation in various fields of science, including fusion technology.

The comments came after EU Foreign Policy Chief Mogherini’s joint press conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tehran.

Zarif has announced that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear agreement between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), has obligated the countries to launch nuclear cooperation with Iran.

The JCPOA, which was finalized by Iran and the Group 5+1 (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3) in July last year, took effect on January 16.
