President Rouhani Urges Closer Tehran-Havana Cooperation in All Areas

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani stressed the need for promotion of cooperation between the Islamic Republic and Cuba in all fields, economy in particular.

During a meeting between high-ranking delegations from Iran and Cuba chaired by the two countries’ presidents in Havana on Monday night, Rouhani emphasized that Iran-Cuba Joint Economic Commission should be more active in order to implement previous agreements and deepen economic relations between the two countries.

He further said independent countries should side with each other in the face of difficulties, adding that Cuba has always been Iran’s “close friend” in international circles and this friendship and unity is to the benefit of both nations and should continue.

“Iran and Cuba should boost the level of cooperation in the field of modern technology, including nano and biotechnology and this type of cooperation can increase independent countries’ power against hegemons”.

Cuban President Raul Castro, for his part, hailed Rouhani’s visit to Havana and said his country is proud to be Iran’s steadfast partner.

He further made assurances that no one can hamper the expansion of relations between the Islamic Republic and the Caribbean island nation.

The Iranian president arrived in Cuba earlier on Monday, following his official visit to Venezuela, where he participated in the 17th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

He also plans to visit New York to attend the 71st Regular Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In addition to an address to the UNGA, the president is scheduled to hold several meetings with top foreign officials, religious leaders and political elites in New York.
