"Approximately 12 officers injured. One officer hit in face with a rock," the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) said on its Twitter feed.

The CMPD said in a statement quoted by local media Tuesday that one of its officers shot and killed Keith Lamont Scott, 43, during searches on an outstanding warrant. The department claimed Scott was armed and "posed an imminent deadly threat to the officers."

Dozens of officers in riot gear faced off with several hundred demonstrators in Charlotte's University City area later, according to Sputnik News. Police deployed tear gas after water bottles were thrown their way, the outlet said.
