President: Iran Resolved to Help Restore Full Security to Iraq

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani reiterated Tehran’s firm policy to continue supporting Baghdad, saying that the Islamic Republic spares no efforts to help Iraq in its campaign against foreign-backed terrorists.

Speaking in a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in New York on Wednesday evening, President Rouhani highlighted the importance of stability and security in Iraq and pledged Tehran’s unwavering support for the Arab country.

“The main goal of Tehran’s support for the Iraqi government, army and Hashd al-Shaabi (popular forces) is to liberate the people from Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorists…,” he said, adding that Iran will spare no efforts to reach the goal.

“Iran has always stood by the Iraqi government and people, especially during the ups and downs in recent months, and will continue supporting the Iraqi nation to the end,” Rouhani said.

He further praised the growing relations between the two neighboring countries and said Tehran is determined to further develop ties with Baghdad in all fields.

The Iraqi premier, for his part, described Tehran-Baghdad ties as strategic and beneficial to both sides and the region.

He also hailed Iran’s cooperation with Iraq in the fight against terrorism and said, “Currently, thousands of popular forces are combatting Daesh. The terrorist group is nearing its end and we are attempting to clear the path for liberating Mosul (the last major city held by Daesh).”
