Syrian Military Expert Lauds Army’s Major Gain in Central Aleppo

DAMASCUS (Tasnim) – A Syrian military expert praised the liberation of a strategic neighborhood in the northern city of Aleppo by Syrian Army troops, saying they forced terrorist groups to retreat from the area after three years.

According to Tasnim dispatches, Syrian forces recently captured Farafra neighborhood in central Aleppo near an ancient citadel after several days of intense fighting with the terrorist groups there.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, the military expert said the liberation of the area led to the destruction of the terrorists’ defense lines in old neighborhoods of the city, where the militants have been stationed for three years.

He added that the major advance has also created a secure supply line for Syrian army forces stationed in Aleppo’s ancient citadel.

The developments came after Syrian troops recaptured the Handarat camp in Aleppo on Thursday following fierce clashes with militants from the Takfiri terrorist group Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, formerly known as al-Nusra Front.

The Handarat camp is strategically important for the Syrian army as it is the only crossing for terrorists between Aleppo and its suburbs.

With the recapture of the camp, all major militant supply routes from Turkey were cut off.

Aleppo, once Syria’s commercial and industrial hub, has been divided roughly in two parts since 2012, with the government controlling the west and terrorists the east.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
