Heading a high-ranking delegation, Ayatollah Amoli Larijani left Tehran for Baghdad on Saturday afternoon at the official invitation of his Iraqi counterpart Medhat al-Mahmoud.
Speaking to reporters before his departure for Iraq, he said the two countries currently have four important judicial agreements, adding that during the trip, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) is slated to be signed with Iraqi authorities.
Ayatollah Amoli Larijani also said during his visit, he will meet with senior Iraqi officials, including Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, President Fuad Masum and the a number of prominent clerics in the holy city of Najaf.
Back in 2014, Ayatollah Amoli Larijani and Mahmoud held a meeting in Tehran to explore avenues for expanding judicial cooperation between the two Muslim countries in different areas, including extradition of prisoners.
In August 2015, one hundred Iranian prisoners held in Iraq were extradited from the Arab country based on a new extradition treaty between the two sides.
