Mogherini: Trump Can’t Cancel Iran’s Nuclear Deal

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Responding to US president-elect Donald Trump’s negative remarks about Iran’s nuclear deal, Federica Mogherini, the EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, said the US can’t cancel the deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

“The Iranian nuclear agreement is not a mutual deal between Iran and US, but a multilateral agreement, which I am still responsible as the chairman of joint commission to supervise the full implementation of nuclear agreement by all sides,” Mogherini said during an interview with CNN.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), reached the comprehensive nuclear deal in July 2015 and it was implemented in January 2016.

During his presidential campaigns, Trump said the JCPOA was a “terrible” and “disastrous” deal.

“We give them $150 billion, we get nothing,” he said.

Under the JCPOA, Iran accessed its assets blocked abroad.

“The nuclear deal is [done] in the framework of the UN Security Council, [it is] not a bilateral or national issue,” Mogherini said.

After Trump’s winning the election, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that Iran expects the new US administration respect the nuclear deal.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Monday that the future US president must remain committed to the JCPOA.
