Indian Refiners Owe $2.55bln to Iran: Oil Minister

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Indian Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said Monday that the South Asian country’s refiners owe $2.55 billion in oil dues to Iran.

Four Indian refiners had an outstanding debt of $6.11 billion in May, 2016, when formal banking channels were opened with Iran after nearly four years, Pradhan said.

"Following the lifting of sanctions on Iran on January 16, 2016 and re-establishment of banking channels from May 20, 2016, Indian refineries have paid $3.563 billion out of $6.118 billion to Iran on account of payment due to National Iranian Oil Co (NIOC) for supply of crude oil," he said as cited by Press Trust of India.

The Indian minister added that the debt was reduced to $2.55 billion as on November 15 after public sector refiners paid most of their dues to Iran.

Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 finalized a comprehensive nuclear deal and started implementing it on January 16.

The agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), terminated all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran.
