Syrian Envoy Urges Trump to End US Support for Terrorists
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria’s Ambassador to Iran Adnan Hassan Mahmoud stressed the need for a change in Washington’s polices against Damascus, calling on US President-elect Donald Trump to end the United States’ financial and military support for terrorists fighting the Syrian government.
Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Mahmoud pointed to the recent remarks by Trump on the Syrian crisis and the Middle East, saying, “It is desirable that the mistakes of the previous (US) administrations be corrected.”
Those mistakes included backing terrorist groups in Syria and led to the spread of terrorism in the region and the world, he added.
The envoy said it is also desirable that the next president of the US be committed to combatting terrorism, avoid interference in other countries’ internal affairs, adhere to UN resolutions and end financial and military support provided by Washington for terrorists.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.
According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
Daesh as a Takfiri group in Iraq and Syria, is believed to be supported by the US and some regional Arab countries.
