IMO Eyes Iran’s Partnership in Making Maritime Regulations
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Kitack Lim hailed Iran’s strategic position in the region, voicing the UN agency’s readiness to get help from Tehran in devising maritime regulations, Iran’s ambassador to Britain announced.
In a post on his social network account, Hamid Baeidinejad provided details of his Wednesday meeting with the IMO secretary-general in London, saying Mr. Lim was impressed by Iran’s outstanding position as a neighbor of Russia and Turkey.
Iran is strategically located in a perfect spot, linking the East to the West, the ambassador quoted Lim as saying.
The UN official also highlighted the “influential role” that Iran can play in drafting maritime and shipping regulations in the IMO, Baeidinejad, also Iran’s permanent representative to IMO added.
Meanwhile, IMO official website published a report of the meeting in London, saying Iran became the latest country to accede to the IMO treaty covering dumping of wastes at sea.
According to the report, the two officials held a meeting at IMO headquarters to deposit the instrument of accession to the London Convention Protocol of 1996 and corresponding 2009 amendments.
IMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations, known as the global standard-setting authority for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping.
The organization has currently 171 Member States and three Associate Members.
