Pakistan Interested in Consultation with Russia on Afghan Peace Process

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Pakistan is interested in the upcoming talks with Russia and China on the peace process in Afghanistan that is mired in civil unrest, Pakistani Deputy Foreign Minister Tasneem Aslam told Sputnik on Thursday.

The deputy foreign minister added that every format of peace talks brought something new to the table with different participants offering different perspectives, but stressed that Pakistan had suffered worse than any other country from the unrest in Afghanistan.

"We have an interest in this consultation (with Russia and China)… to find the way forward… Russia is a global power, is a country that has abiding interest in this peace, in this region. They have a legitimate interest in holding this meeting," Aslam said.

The issue of repatriation of Afghan refugees, many of whom are residing in neighboring Iran and Pakistan, arose earlier in the year, after the Pakistani authorities deported undocumented Afghans who had not received official refugee status or whose temporary asylum application had expired.

Afghanistan is experiencing political, social and security instability, particularly due to the activity of the Taliban militant group. The crisis in the country prompted the emergence of local cells of other extremist organizations such as Daesh, which is banned in many countries, including Russia.
