Iran Has Legal Capacities to Counter Breach of JCPOA: Shamkhani
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani stressed that the country has what it takes legally to act against violation of the July 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.
Speaking to reporters in Tehran on Sunday, Shamkhani said there is a consensus among all Iranian officials that renewal of anti-Iran sanctions constitutes a violation of the nuclear agreement, and urged the US president to veto a bill recently passed by the US Congress to extend the sanctions.
“We have the necessary legal capacities to counter breach of the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action),” Shamkhani further said, referring to the nuclear deal.
He added that a bill passed by the Iranian parliament, a 9-point directive issued by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei and an SNSC approval have given those in charge a free hand to deal with the issue.
“We will take necessary measures commensurate with what the other side does,” Shamkhani went on to say.
Earlier this month, the US Senate voted 99-0 to extend the Iran Sanctions Act (ISA) for ten more years.
The bill was passed by the House of Representatives nearly unanimously in November, and congressional aides said they expected US President Barack Obama would sign it.
