IAEA’s Amano in Tehran for Talks on JCPOA Implementation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano arrived in Tehran early Sunday to meet with high-ranking Iranian officials.

Heading a delegation, Amano arrived in the Iranian capital on Sunday to hold meetings with senior Iranian officials over the implementation of last year’s nuclear agreement between the Islamic Republic and six world powers.

Upon his arrival, the IAEA chief held a meeting with Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi.

He is also scheduled to sit down with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

In a statement released on Friday, the IAEA said Yukiya Amano's Sunday visit to Tehran “is part of regular high-level contacts between the agency and Iran.”

“In Tehran, the director general will discuss Iran's implementation of its nuclear-related commitments” under the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the UN’s nuclear watchdog added.

It is Amano’s second trip to Iran in 2016. He once visited Tehran in January, days after the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear agreement between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), came into force.

The nuclear agreement had been signed on July 14, 2015 following two and a half years of intensive talks.

The IAEA is responsible for monitoring Iran’s nuclear activities as per the nuclear deal and should also help the country develop its nuclear energy program.
