Syrian Warplanes Hit Daesh Positions in Palmyra
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian warplanes on Sunday pounded Daesh (ISIL and ISIS) positions in east of the ancient city of Palmyra, Homs Governorate, inflicting heavy casualties and material losses upon the terrorists.
Syrian fighter jets targeted the hideouts of Daesh in east of Palmyra and north of Abu Kalla Dam in the countryside of Homs, according to SANA news agency.
Large groups of the terrorists were killed in the bombings. Also, two vehicles equipped with heavy machine guns were destroyed during the operation.
Earlier, the terrorist group launched a massive offensive against Palmyra and managed to seize partial control of oil and gas fields to the city’s northwest.
In response, the Syrian army deployed reinforcements to the ancient city to prevent the Takfiri terrorists from further advancing toward the city.
Daesh overran the town in May last year, and systematically destroyed temples and tower tombs at the town’s UNESCO World Heritage site, before being pushed out by government forces and their allies.
Separately, the Syrian forces on Sunday repelled an attack by Takfiri terrorists in the town of Um Walad in Syria's southwestern city of Sweida, killing scores of them.
The conflict in Syria, which flared up in March 2011, has claimed the lives of more than 470,000 people.
