Iran, Russia Coordinate Syria Peace Efforts

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Presidents of Iran and Russia discussed the latest regional developments in a telephone conversation, with both emphasizing the need for incessant fight against terrorist groups in Syria while pursuing political negotiations for peace in the Arab country.

In the third telephone conversation in a month on Saturday night, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin focused on the situation in Syria following the liberation of the city of Aleppo from terrorist groups.

Highlighting the need for saving people besieged by terrorists in different part of Syria and for immediate relief aid for the war-affected Syrians, President Rouhani called for efforts to prevent terrorist groups from regrouping their forces during ceasefire or from setting up new bases in sensitive parts of Syria.

He also hailed an upcoming round of peace talks among Syrian groups in Kazakhstan as a step forward.

For his part, Putin underlined that Tehran-Moscow collaboration and coordination that constitute a “constructive policy in the international arena” will go on.

The battle and victories against terrorist groups should be simultaneous with the launch of peace negotiations, the Russian leader noted.

The Syrian Army recaptured the strategic city of Aleppo from terrorist groups last week after a four-year battle with the military support from its allies, including Russia and Iran.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (ISIL), controlling parts of it.
