Iran’s Former President Rafsanjani Dies at 82


TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Former Iranian President and Chairman of the country’s Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani died after suffering heart attack, one of family relatives confirmed on Sunday.

Rafsanjani has been transferred to a Tehran hospital on Sunday after a heart failure.

Hossein Mar’ashi told the Tasnim News Agency that measures taken by medical staffs to revive him were futile.

Ayatollah Rafsanjani was the fourth president of Iran. He served as president from 1989 to 1997.

Rafsanjani was elected chairman of the Iranian parliament in 1980 and served until 1989.

He was the head of the Assembly of Experts from 2007 until 2011. He was also head of Iran's Expediency Council ever since 1987.

During the Iran–Iraq War Rafsanjani was the de facto commander-in-chief of the Iranian Armed forces.
