Iran to Remain on Syria’s Side in Post-War Reconstruction: Jahangiri

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri reiterated the country’s continued support for the Syrian government and people, saying the Islamic Republic will help the Arab country in its reconstruction after the ongoing crisis ends.

“Since the beginning of Syria’s campaign against terrorists, the Islamic Republic of Iran has sided with the country’s people and government and has spared no efforts to strengthen the Resistance line,” Jahangiri said at a joint meeting between high-ranking Iranian and Syrian officials in Tehran on Tuesday.

He further pointed to the numerous damages inflicted on the Syrian economy and infrastructure during the ongoing war in the Arab country and said, “the Islamic Republic is ready to side with Syria in the reconstruction period.”

Jahangiri also expressed the hope that the trip to Iran by the Syrian delegation headed by Prime Minister Imad Khamis would yield constructive results for both countries.

During the meeting, Khamis hailed Iran’s massive political, military and economic support for his country and stressed the need to draft a roadmap to boost trade ties between the two nations.

Khamis arrived in Tehran on Tuesday morning at the head of a senior economic delegation.

Syria has been gripped with civil war since March 2011. According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.

Throughout these years, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.
